Point
What is democracy?
It is a type of government or political system ruled by the citizens, people who are members of a society. In a democracy, citizens hold some level of power and authority and they participate actively in the political or decision making process of their Government. There are two types of democracy – Direct and Representative Democracy.
Direct Democracy is when every member of the society participates directly in the political process and Representative Democracy is when the members of a society vote for leaders to represent them in the decision and actions of political process.
Principle of Democracy –the source of the authority of Government is a fundamental principle of democracy. The political equality of all citizens is an essential principle of democracy. India is the biggest and one of the most important democratic country in the world. Indian democracy today is as old as sixty two years and it has survived despite many countries have yielded to dictatorship and military rule. Democratic government ensures good opportunity for the overall growth and well-being of citizens.
Hence, public opinion is the essence of democracy. Democracy is important as it protects the interests and demands of minority groups. In democracy minorities are free from discrimination and their views are as important as majority views. Therefore democracy is characterized by peaceful co-existence of different ideas and ideals. Since, Ballot and not Bullet is the essence of democracy, their exists multiple political parties.
Overall I feel that democracy is an extremely important part of political system in the modern age as it gives people the ability to participate and to be free. Whether direct or representative democracy is used in a government it still gives people these opportunities and makes the system fair for anybody and everybody.
Counter Point
Beginning with what dictatorship is. It is a form of Government where the majority, if not all power, is granted to one individual.
The people being governed have no say in the way they are governed.
Now , what are the benefits of dictatorship?
Elections are imperfect things.
While the majority of population is represented, there is always going to be a portion that is not.
In a society some would argue that trying to apply something potent and volatile as election is a recipe to disaster.
By giving all the power to one person the government can move quickly like a machine.
A dictator is a leader who possesses exceptional talent in the field of organisation and administration.
Many would argue that the very thing that gives DEMOCRACY its greatest strength may also become its greatest weakness…YES YOU ITSELF. THE COMMON FOLK.
If a country were to find itself in a situation which required a quick but firm decision in order to keep its people safe, a dictator is able to prove himself victorious.
CHANGE is an important aspect of any society but democracy can slow it to the snail’s pace. This may lead the other form of the Government to be more progressive and eager to embrace new things thereby, proving that dictatorship is better.
